SSQG October 2013 Meeting Minutes

Sassi Strippers Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes – October 17, 2013

President Becky Fincher called the meeting to order at 6:30pm welcoming 10 members.

The meeting minutes were accepted by Valerie Valle and Betty Braud, respectively.

Treasurer Heidi Brochard provided the treasurer’s report.  It was reported that there was a balance of $855.93 as of September 30, 2013 in the SSQG account. There was a deposit of $6.00 for a new membership and expenses of $224.54 during the month of September. This included a purchase of 2-$25 gift cards from Walmart for a gift for the library interns who assisted with hanging and taking down the quilts for the show.  It was discussed that the library interns would not accept the gift so the guild will use the gift cards to purchase fiber-fill stuffing for the charity bear project.  Treasurer’s report was accepted as given by Jessie Comeaux and Valerie Valle, respectively.

Blog Site – Valerie Valle

Meeting minutes and pictures are posted on the blogsite.  If anyone has info to be posted on the blogsite, please give it to Valerie Valle.

Guild members are encouraged to look at the blog site to access meeting minutes, pictures of guild events, etc. and also to make comments on the posts.  The address for the blog site is http://sassistrippersquiltguild.blogspot.com/

Unfinished Projects (UFO’s) – Jessie Comeaux

Jessie Comeaux is the chair for 2013.  The quilt needs to be quilted and finished to be counted as completing the UFO.  You can add a quilt at any stage to the list (blocks, fabric, kit, etc.).

Please bring your UFO lists to the next meeting!  A copy of the blank list has been posted to the blog site.  Elsie Hamway is leading this challenge.  Keep up the good work.

Send Jessie Comeaux an email with the name of the quilts that you complete throughout the year.

Tabs – Becky Fincher

Becky Fincher is the guild contact for this charity project.  Please detach the flip tops from all aluminum soda, soup, juice, vegetable, etc. cans.  Bring them to the meeting.  Tabs will be sent to Ronald McDonald House in New Orleans for 2013.  Betty Braud’s son delivered a batch recently.

Door Prize Drawing – April Reeves

April Reeves volunteered to be the guild contact in charge of door prizes.  These were items donated by other guild members or members of the quilting community.  If there is something that you don’t use or have a duplicate of something in your quilt room, please consider donating it to the group to use as a door prize.  Stay tuned for more chances to win a door prize at a future quilt meeting.  Heidi Brouchard and Betty Braud won the door prizes during the October meeting.

Charity Quilts

The guild will continue to use its donated fabric to construct charity quilts in 2014.

Merlene Lewis and Elsie Hamway are the co-chairs for 2013.  Members can choose whatever pattern they would like as long as it makes a lap size quilt (50”x60”).  The guild has less than a bin of charity fabric left.  We may have a “Clean out your stash” donation day in the future to build up our charity fabric stash.  Becky Fincher proposed this idea during the September meeting.

Becky Fincher is waiting on feedback from Raven’s Outreach for the quilt donations made for 2013.

If the guild makes a special request to The Giving Quilt, charity fabric from their stash can be donated to our guild for use during 2014. More discussion to come…

Teddy Bear’s for Kids

Merlene Lewis presented this charity project before the guild (as noted in August 2011 minutes and voted on in November 2011).  Our Lady Of The Lake Children’s Hospital called & notified Merlene that they very much wanted the bears Sassi Strippers was offering to make for child patients.  The hospital mentioned that they look forward to getting more bears.

Please see the blogsite for a posting of the pattern.

Please feel free to make as many as you would like to & bring them to a future meeting.  If you do not have the instructions, please let us know and we can provide extra copies at the next meeting.

They can be made of materials you have in your stash, plaids, prints, solids or Flannel, anything you want to use.  Please let us know if anyone would like some of the guild’s donated fabric to make the bears.

A total of 1,617 bears have been made to-date.

Challenge Block

A challenge was issued to members of the guild to make 8.5” blocks that represent the Sassi Strippers Quilt Guild.  Please make a block that represents our guild.  Renee Hoeprich made a motion and the guild voted to make the blocks due at the February 2014 meeting. The block will be used on the blogsite as our “official” quilt block that represents the guild.

New Business

Voting on Changes to By-Laws

A vote was taken via email and in-person at the November meeting to change the guild by-laws as follows:

(1)  The President of the guild will appoint a Nominating Committee at the September meeting each year.  The Committee shall present a list of candidates to the membership during the October meeting of every year, at which time the nominations may also be taken from the floor. During the November meeting, those members present will vote for the new officers (was Executive Board).

(2)  The one-year term of each officer will begin with the January meeting of the New Year (was previously two-year term).

(3)  In case of vacancy occurring during any office, the Executive Board shall appoint someone to fill the term.

The vote passed and the changes to the by-laws will be made accordingly.

Nominating Committee

Merlene Lewis and Betty Braud have been chosen to be the nominating committee for the new officers for 2014.  The nominations were presented at the October meeting and a vote will be taken at the November meeting.

The slate has been presented as follows:

Karol Guidry – President

Renee Hoeprich – Vice President

Becky Fincher – Secretary

Elsie Hamway – Treasurer

There were no nominations from the floor and the guild will accept the new slate of officers at the November meeting.

Christmas Party

Elsie will reserve a room at City Café. The party will take place on December 12th at 6pm. A vote was taken to bring a quilt-related gift (value $15) to the party for a gift exchange.
