Upcoming Charity Sew Day

Hi Everyone,

The next Charity Sew Day is scheduled for June 18th from 12:30p.m. to 4:00p.m. at the Jones Creek Library.  Save the date!  Come on out and help sew together the quilt top.  We made a lot of progress on our last sew day.  Hope to see you there.

Sew Day for Charity Quilts is a success!

Today was the second sew day for the Charity Quilts at Sassi Strippers. 7 of us gathered to cut and sort last time. This time we sewed and cut background strips. Jessie. Linda and I ran sewing machines, Valerie V ironed, Valerie B cut, Merline laid out the pattern.

The pattern we are using is a mystery designed to be made for Charity Quilts. So we are in total compliance with the rules on this one! LOL.

We want to have these finished for the Annual Quilt Show in August at the Library. We have not decided where the quilts will be donated yet, but we have time to figure that out later!

Habitat for Humanity

SSQG May 19, 2011 Meeting

Hi Everyone,

 

Sorry for the short notice.  Yes, we are having a Sassi Stripper quilt guild meeting tonight at the Jones Creek Library at 6:30p.m.  Glenda is going to do a demo on "making fabric" from scraps.  So, if you want to bring some of those bits and pieces from the scrap bag please feel free.  I will also need a head count of who will be attending the charity sew day on Saturday.  Valerie will go over the next step in the mystery project. 

 

Please bring the usual, fat quarters (any type since short notice), can tabs, cards, strips for the exchange, and show and tell!

Charity Sew Day

Hi Everyone,

Valerie has let me know that the Jones Creek Library is available on Saturday, May 21st from 9am-1pm for our charity sew day.  We still have cutting to do, so we need 2-3  people to volunteer to bring cutting boards, rulers and rotary cutters.  We also need 2 people to bring irons and ironing boards.  Bring your sewing machines, and basic sewing supplies some neutral thread and if several people can bring clean empty pizza boxes we can put the completed blocks in them to lay flat.  We will have a meeting on Thursday May 19th and we can go over any last minute details then.  Remember to put this on your calendar!

   President Linda Baumann welcomed members and opened the meeting at 6:50pm. There were no guests present.

   Treasurer Paula St. Romain was unable to be present but sent word the amount present in the treasury had remained unchanged and stands at $1151.80.

   Secretary’s report was accepted.                                                                                                                                                                         

                                                                                                                                                               

   Glenda Parks presented an opportunity to host a guild retreat at Pam’s Place Retreat Center in June or July of this year. She asked how many would like to attend & 10 members raised their hands. The date was then set - July15,16 &17. The retreat center has 3 cutting stations, 2 long board ironing stations, 10 work tables w/10 rolling

chairs which sit at work tables & roll into den dining table. The dining table may also be used to pin a quilt or lay one out for block placements. There are 7 design walls in the work room to use for design work, block placement, row layout &/or seeing your quilt from a distance back to switch blocks around or know you have them the way you want them to be. This is a 3 bedroom brick home with full kitchen & beds for 10 people right here in Baton Rouge .                                               

   Glenda sent a list for members to sign that they would like to attend.

   Becky Fincher said that she had two boxes of donated fabric that Paula St. Romain had washed & ironed with her tonite. Valarie Barth had chosen the “Block Aid”

Pattern mystery quilt to have the guild use to make our charity quilts. The sew day will be announced at a later date.

   Next month a representative of Habitat for Humanity will visit & address our guild to let us know what their needs will be for quilts 2011.Members voted - vote passed to donate charity quilts to Habitat for Humanity.

   Guild members then spent the next hour pressing the donated fabrics & cutting the 1^st phase of the mystery quilt pattern. We have begun! Two boxes of fabric were sorted divided into lengths then members cut ½ yard pieces & fat quarters into 5” squares. Large yardage was put in one box to be used as backings along with juvenile fabric, ziplock bags of cut 5” squares & remnants. Becky Frederick agreed to store the box at her home. There now is only one box with donated allocated charity fabric.

   Please try to attend the Giving Quilt Show Saturday May 7^th at the St. Gabriel Community Center . They are expecting 200 charity quilts to be hanging. Much activity will be taking place for those who attend to take part in if they wish to do so. Jambalaya lunch will be on sale + cold drinks. If you miss this event you will try to go next year when those who can go this year talk about all that took place.

Summer Quilt Down Retreat

I have secured the dates of July 15, 16, 17 for the Sassi Stripper Summer Quilt Down Retreat.  (Like WrestleMania’s Summer Smack Down but with quilts!)

I can schedule a class for something like that FQ Bag or a purse or we can do a hour to hour mystery quilt.  Or you can be on your own, whatever the majority wishes.  It will be fun.

I have a list of 11 people who have signed up for the weekend.  We need 9 minimum which would  be a cost of $70 per person for the weekend.  It is the same if you stay for the night or not or leave early or come late.  9 sleeps comfortably, 10 is very doable, and 11 or 12 is tight.  But we can always schedule another weekend if we have more willing to go again.

Pam French’s Retreat House is available to us from 9:30 AM on Friday until about 4:00 PM on Sunday so we have a lot of time to finish a lot of quilts.

SSQG Charity Project update

Hi Everyone,

Sending an update from the meeting this past week on the Sassi Strippers Charity Project.  Valerie Barth found a great  pattern by Judy Hopkins called Block Aid for use by guilds for non-profit community service projects.  This is a mystery charity project. On Thursday, April 21st, we ironed and cut up a good portion of the fat quarters that were donated into 5" squares.  This is the first instruction in the pattern.  If you could not make the meeting, but want to participate at home

you can bring your 5" squares to the next meeting. 

 

Also, the pattern called for a solid or "read as a solid" fabric for the next part of the pattern.  This requires about 2 5/8 yards for a double size.  If you would like to donate a solid for the next step bring it to the next meeting.  We may also check with wasted women to see if they have any solids they can donate to our cause. 

 

Thank you to all that participated and brought irons, ironing boards, mats and fabric.  This is a great group project and I am proud of the way the group all worked together.

 

Thank you again Becky Frederick for taking the box of donated fabric to store for the guild.

SSQG April 21, 2011 Meeting

Hi Everyone, This Thursday, April 21st at 6:30 we will meet at the Jones Creek Library for our monthly meeting.  This month we are going to have an activity for everyone in the guild to participate in.   Remember the fabric that was donated to the guild a while back? Well, we are finally ready to start the process of cutting the fabric up that will eventually be made into charity quilts!   Valerie Barth has located a great pattern that is specifically for guilds that are making quilts for charity.  The fabric is pre-washed but may need to be pressed. I would appreciate if several members could bring cutting mats, rulers and rotary cutters.  Also, a couple of irons and  a table top ironing board would come in handy.  Becky Fincher will be bringing the donated fabric.  We will have a brief meeting to go over committee reports , the Fat Quarter drawings, Show and Tell and door prizes.   Things to Bring to the Meeting: Fat Quarter(s) for drawing -  Pastels Fabric Strips for Exchange - Purple Cutting Mats, Rulers and Rotary Cutters (please put your name on them) Pull tabs, Greeting Cards and other charity items. President Linda Baumann opened the meeting at 6:40pm, welcoming everyone.

New member April Reeves was welcomed into our guild.

Treasurer Paula St. Romain reported $1151.80 was the balance in the guild’s treasury.

Secretary’s was accepted as corrected.

Old Business:

Sew Days – Valarie Barth will arrange possible dates to press donated fabric, cut out, arrange fabric according to pattern & color; then members will sew all

prepared fabric into charity quilts. It is possible that several dates may need to be arranged in order to complete the project.

New Business:

A questionnaire will be forthcoming to our membership to let members say what they are interested in learning, program ideas, games to play, monthly

fabric lotto/swap/drawing etc. Any ideas you have & suggestions that may improve the guild. What would you be interested in doing, seeing & learning?

What interests do you have etc?

Andrea introduced members to Moda designer’s pattern Flag of Valor – 1800 Star blocs are needed by May 2011. You may make blocks if you wish.

Becky Fincher reported that Diane Deaton asked if SSQG would make a quilt to be raffled with the money it raised going to Habitat for Humanity. Glenda

Parks volunteered to put the quilt together & Jessie Comeaux volunteered to quilt it. Guild members may take part in designing the quilt, choosing the colors

& making & placing the blocks as well as sewing the rows together.

Jessie Comeaux represented our guild as liaison to Lost Heroes Quilt Project.

GSQA members in our guild are: Jessie, Paula, Betty & Nina. Is anyone else a member? It is time to join or renew your membership, all are welcome.

President Linda Baumann invited members & their families to attend The St. Joseph’s Altar at Scared Heart Catholic Church at 11:30am on this Sunday.

She showed & shared a book showing the history of Saint Joseph’s Altar and color photos of actual altars as various churches designed them to praise andgive thanks to St. Joseph for his kindness.

Poccarello’s is selling rosarys made of fava beans.

Dee Jeffers presented a delightful program on making yo yos and showed some of the clowns, animals, dolls and many other delights you can create with any color yo yos.

Members enjoyed making their own yo yo or watching others make them. Secrets in preparation were shared by Dee . Thank you for a fun & informative pro

-gram.   Indygo Junction is a good source of ideas & products, Dee said they were the best she’d found.

Becky Fincher presented a program on the quilting cruise she & her husband had just gotten back home from. He didn’t join in the quilting activities but

found much to enjoy while Becky attended quilting activities, classes & loved newly learned techniques. She bought the most beautiful hand screened batiks

from the islanders who created them in the most beautiful colors. She encouraged members to take a quilting cruise, she enjoyed it very much.

Show & Tell was held: Our newest member April Reeves showed the 2^nd quilt she made & we all instantly fell in love with it! Members also showed their beautiful quilts.

Fat quarter Drawing was won by Karol Guidry.

Fat Quarter Lotto – the color to bring this month is pastel prints

Strip Exchange – this month’s color is purple!  Please bring 20 2 ½” strips cut from width of the fabric (WOF). You would cut 10 – 2 ½”

high strips then fold the (WOF) strip in half lengthwise cut once on the fold line = 20  2 ½” strips approximately 2 ½” by ½ the meas

-urement of your Width of fabric is. Fabric is not all 36” wide from selvage to selvage. If it was 36” the strip cut in half would = 18”.

You’d have 2 Strips 2 ½” x 18”. You will just fold your strip in half & cut on the fold line. The length they are will be fine.

This year the colors done are – Jan. – white,  Feb. – red,  March - green,  - this month as shown above – is purple! If you would like to do this, please do join in.
