This includes the previous month’s balance of $824.23 and a deposit of $111 (based on 8 paid memberships and 3 cookbook sales ($15)).   A copy of the treasurer’s report was given to the secretary.  Treasurer’s report was accepted by Renee Hoeprich and Betty Braud, respectively.

An additional $261.50 was given to the treasurer to deposit based on the used book and magazine sales.

Old business –

Blog Site – Valerie Valle

Valerie provided an overview of posts and the blogsite.  Documents cannot be posted in word or .pdf on the blogsite.  Valerie Valle told everyone to let her know if there were any questions about the blog site.

Guild members are encouraged to look at the blog site to access meeting minutes, pictures of guild events, etc. and also to make comments on the posts.  The address for the blog site is http://sassistrippersquiltguild.blogspot.com/.

Tabs

Madeline Monroe is the guild contact for this charity project.  Please detach the flip tops from all aluminum soda, soup, juice, vegetable, etc. cans.  Bring them to the meeting.  Tabs will be sent to Ronald McDonald Children’s hospital in Monroe for another year.  Becky’s sister will take them when she travels to Monroe.  There were no can tabs collected at this meeting.

Quilt Show – August 2012

We are back on the books for our annual quilt show at the Jones Creek library.  Our month is August once again.  Betty Braud and Renee Hoeprich will co-chair the show.   Betty,  Renee, and Merlene met at the library to start the planning process.

Most quilts will not be able to be hung until August because the library has another display planned for July.  There are some areas where quilts/items will be able to be displayed earlier than others.

Bring all quilts to the July meeting (July 19th is the meeting date).  All quilts must have labels and hanging sleeves.  Renee handed out index cards to fill out – name/size/how many quilts will be provided to hang in show.  The committee is just trying to get an idea of whether we have enough hangers for the quilts.  Updates to your index card can be revised as you make your plans for quilts to bring.

Betty Braud asked for additional volunteers for the quilt show committee.   If you are interested in helping out, please let either Betty or Renee know.  Volunteers are needed to plan demos, kids’ projects, and to help with the display cases.

Jessie presented the two quilts from last year that have been quilted and will be donated to charity as part of the show.  The quilts were given to the quilt show planning committee.

Fabric swap

There was one member that brought her two yards of fabric to the meeting.  We will try one more time next month to see if there is enough interest for this project.  It’s not too late to join in on the fun.

Rules: Put two yards of fabric in a brown paper bag.  Please do not put your name on the bag.  We will have a person that is not participating that will log in the bags and hand them back out to a new person.  The finished quilts need to incorporate the fabric that you receive and also any other fabrics of your choice. The size of the quilt must be a lap size or greater.  The finished quilts should be brought back to the Christmas party (December meeting) and the original fabric owner will get their finished quilt.  Please do not tell anyone whose fabric you receive, as it should be a surprise at the end of the year. Please keep a swatch of your fabric – just in case you forget which fabric you supplied by December.

New Roads Quilt Show

There will be a judged quilt show in New Roads on March 22 through the end of March.  Jessie Comeaux has additional information.  The show will be held at the Poydras High School.

Krotz Springs Quilt Guild

The Sassi Strippers accepted the invitation from the Krotz Springs Quilt Guild to bring a show and tell of our quilts to their quilt show which will be held on Saturday, July 14th from 10am-2pm.  Lunch will be included and the Sassi Strippers would need to be in Krotz Springs for approximately four hours.  More discussion to come in the future about transportation and logistics.  You can bring as many quilts as you would like to the show and tell.

Quilt Guild Book Sale

The Sassi Strippers were given a collection of magazines/quilt books after the last library quilt show in August 2011.  An additional donation of books/magazines was recently made to the guild.  A total of $261.50 was presented to the treasurer for deposit of proceeds from the sale.  The remaining books that were not sold will be donated to the library and the duplicates will be given away as door prizes at future meetings.  The magazines will be used as door prizes as well.

Hand Quilting at the Rural Life Museum

The Rural Life Museum wants folks to hand quilt at the museum on Mondays and Tuesdays.  Renee has volunteered to help.  The group meets for 2 hours on Monday and Tuesday in an “old time” quilt bee fashion.  For more information, contact Renee.

Charity Quilts

The guild will use its donated fabric to construct charity quilts.  Jessie provided 6 different patterns and the guild voted on 2 choices during last month’s meeting.  Jessie presented the winners Bento Box Block (#1) and Nine Patch Lattice (#2) during the March meeting.  Lap size quilts will be made.  We will have a sew-in at the library and the date will be announced in the future.  Another option would be to meet at River City’s 2nd Sat sew-in to work as a group.  Two charities were contacted for possible quilt donation – Cancer Services on Lobdell, which will take any size quilts, and a veteran’s home, which will take lap/twin quilts.

Unfinished Projects (UFO’s) – Jessie Comeaux

Jessie will remain the chairman for 2012 and has copies of forms for members to sign up.  The quilt needs to be quilted and finished to be counted as completing the UFO.  You can add a quilt at any stage to the list (blocks, fabric, kit, etc.) at the start.  It’s not too late to sign up for the UFO challenge.  Just give your list to Jessie Comeaux.

New business

Block of the Month - Becky

We are doing a block of the month project for 2012.  Becky Fincher is the guild contact for this activity.  Becky sent out an email with the details as well as the blocks for January, February, and March.  Please note that each block will be 12” finished.  Several members brought their blocks.

See 2/23/12 email to guild from Becky Fincher (copy below)…

Dear Ladies,

I don't know where the last week went. I apologize for taking a week to get this out. I will have printouts at the next meeting to be copied if you have problems downloading. Call me if you have a problem and maybe I can walk you thru. I went back to www.quilterscache.com for free blocks we can use. Each person will be making their own quilt.

Fancy Stipes for January, Mr. Roosevelt's Necktie for February, and Four Corners for March, if you want more let me know.

Enjoy making new blocks,

Becky Fincher

Teddy Bear’s for Kids

Merlene Lewis presented this charity project before the guild last year (as noted in August 2011 minutes and voted on in November 2011).  There has been no additional interest shown by the BTR General Hospital Bluebonnet location.  The guild came up with a list of additional charities:  Children’s Hospital, Battered Women’s shelter, or Connections for Life.  More details to be discussed at the next meeting.  The guild would make teddy bears out of donated fabric for the patents.  Merlene has a copy of the pattern to be used.

Update since the last meeting – See email from Karol Guidry on 4/2/12 and below…

Our Lady Of The Lake Regional Medical Center Emergency Room called &
notified Merlene that they very much wanted the bears Sassi Strippers was
offering to make for child patients. The lady asked her how many were
already made up & could she deliver them right away. Please feel free to
make as many as you would like to & bring them to this month's meeting.
Merlene will bring some to show guild members who haven't seen them.
They can be made of materials you have in your stash, plaids, prints,
solids or Flannel, what ever you want to use. Maybe Valarie might like to
bring some guild materials from donated fabric she is storing.
P. S. Fair Oaks Hospital mentioned in thanks in the instructions was
recipient of bears made by Merlene's prior guild before she & her husband
moved back to Louisiana.

More information to be discussed at the next meeting!  Thank you, Merlene and Karol.

Alzheimer’s Priority Quilts (AAQI)

This initiative will be open to the entire gulf coast quilting community.  Please see the following websites for the rules and entry forms:

http://rivercityquilts.blogspot.com

The River City Quilt Guild issued a challenge to other local quilt guilds (including the Sassi Strippers) for quilts.

Alz. quilts were collected at the March meeting.  A total of 5 quilts were collected and these will be displayed in the GSQA quilt show in Slidell.

The library quilt show planning committee would like to have a small display of Alz. quilts to hang in our library quilt show as well so there is still time to make one.   Quilts can still be donate to AAQI at any time.

The AAQI challenge is to make a quilt that is a maximum of 9 x 11 inches.  It has to have a hanger (either o-rings or fast-triangle method).  See the websites for tutorials on the hangers if necessary.  Every quilt must be accompanied by a registration form.

If you use a pattern that has a copyright, then you need to obtain permission to use it for your AAQI quilt.  Please attach the permission slip to the registration form.

You can use any 8” block or smaller and turn it into a quilt.

Program – Judy Holley

Judy made a presentation to the group on color and value and how to make choices on quilt design.

Door Prize Drawing

Andrea Keith is the guild contact in charge of door prizes.  These were items donated by other guild members or members of the quilting community.  If there is something that you don’t use or have a duplicate of something in your quilt room, please consider donating it to the group to use as a door prize.  Stay tuned for more chances to win a door prize at a future quilt meeting.

Show and Tell

There were 16 folks in attendance at the meeting – 12 members and 4 guests.

Next month – Let’s talk fabric.  Bring your favorite fabric line and your not-so-favorite fabric to use in a quilt… and JoAnn is open so we will be creating guild membership cards so that you can get your JoAnn discounts…
