Sassi Strippers Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes – April 19, 2012
President Becky Fincher called meeting to order at 6:30pm
welcoming 12 members. Becky thanked
Jessie Comeaux for running the March meeting in her absence.
Secretary’s report was accepted by Karol Guidry and Kalpana
Parekh, respectively.
Treasurer Heidi Brochard reported a balance of $1,220.73 in
the SSQG account. This includes the previous month’s balance of $935.23 and a
deposit of $285.50 (based on 2 paid memberships and proceeds from the used book
sale). A copy of the treasurer’s report was given to
the secretary. Treasurer’s report was
accepted by Elsie Hamway and Valerie Valle, respectively.
Blog Site –
Valerie Valle
Valerie provided an overview
of posts and the blogsite. Meeting minutes
are posted on the blogsite. If anyone
has info to be posted on the blogsite, please give it to Valerie Valle.
Guild members are encouraged to look at the blog site to
access meeting minutes, pictures of guild events, etc. and also to make comments
on the posts. The address for the blog

Tabs
Madeline
Monroe is the guild contact for this charity project. Please detach the flip tops from all aluminum
soda, soup, juice, vegetable, etc. cans.
Bring them to the meeting. Tabs
will be sent to Ronald McDonald House in Monroe for another year. Becky’s sister will take them when she travels
to Monroe. Becky read a thank you note
dated March 8, 2012 from the Ronald McDonald House thanking the Sassi Strippers
for their last donation. The employees
at the OLOL blood bank collect tabs for the Sassi Strippers to donate. Merlene brought a huge bag of tabs that we
will donate soon. Valerie Barth will
send a thank you note to the employees at the blood bank.
Unfinished Projects
(UFO’s) – Jessie Comeaux
Jessie Comeaux is the chair for
2012 and has copies of forms for members to sign up. The quilt needs to be quilted and finished to
be counted as completing the UFO. You
can add a quilt at any stage to the list (blocks, fabric, kit, etc.) at the
start. It’s not too late to sign up for
the UFO challenge. Just give your list
to Jessie Comeaux. Jessie reported that
she finished two quilts on her list. Get
quilting ladies…
Quilt Show –
August 2012
We
are back on the books for our annual quilt show at the Jones Creek
library. Our month is August once
again. Betty Braud and Renee Hoeprich
will co-chair the show. Betty, Renee, and Merlene met at the library to
start the planning process.
Most
quilts will not be able to be hung until August because the library has another
display planned for July. There are some
areas where quilts/items will be able to be displayed earlier than others.
Bring
all quilts to the July meeting (July 19th is the meeting date). All quilts must have labels and hanging
sleeves. Progress was made collecting
information from the last years’ shows to help with the planning process. Valerie Valle has the quilt hangers in her
garage and is providing them to the show committee to take inventory. This year we are looking at having some
stands for quilted jackets. There will
be a small AAQI quilt display as part of the show.
Krotz Springs
Quilt Guild
The
Sassi Strippers accepted the invitation from the Krotz Springs Quilt Guild to
bring a show and tell of our quilts to their quilt show which will be held on
Saturday, July 14th from 10am-2pm.
Lunch will be included and the Sassi Strippers would need to be in Krotz
Springs for approximately four hours.
More discussion to come in the future about transportation and
logistics. You can bring as many quilts
as you would like to the show and tell. The Krotz Springs quilt show will
include a “boutique” with items for sale.
Since the Sassi Strippers will be helping out with the show, the Krotz
Springs Quilt Guild invited the Sassi Strippers to come at 9am to shop early
before the show. There will be door
prizes given as part of the quilt show.
Fabric swap
We will not be completing a
“brown bag” fabric swap this year.
Activity was cancelled due to lack of interest.
New Roads Quilt
Show
Jessie Comeaux provided an
update about the New Roads quilt show.
There was a judged quilt show in New Roads on March 22 through the end
of March. Jessie Comeaux had quilts
hanging in the show. One of Jessie’s
quilts won Viewer’s Choice. Jessie said
that it was a good show and that the Sassi Strippers should keep it in mind for
next year, as they award good prizes at the show.
Alzheimer’s
Priority Quilts (AAQI)

The River City Quilt Guild issued a challenge to other
local quilt guilds (including the Sassi Strippers) for quilts. Alz. quilts were collected at the March
meeting. A total of 5 quilts were
collected and these will be displayed in the GSQA quilt show in Slidell. They were displayed as numbers 138-142 at the
GSQA show and will also be found on the AAQI website for sale in the future.
The library quilt show planning committee would like to
have a small display of Alz. quilts to hang in our library quilt show as well
so there is still time to make one.
Quilts can still be donate to AAQI at any time.
The AAQI challenge is to make a quilt that is a maximum
of 9 x 11 inches. It has to have a
hanger (either o-rings or fast-triangle method). See the websites for tutorials on the hangers
if necessary. Every quilt must be
accompanied by a registration form.
If you use a pattern that has a copyright, then you need
to obtain permission to use it for your AAQI quilt. Please attach the permission slip to the
registration form.
You can use any 8” block or smaller and turn it into a
quilt.
Louisiana
Bicentennial Quilt
The Louisiana
Bicentennial Quilt, titled “Stitch by Stitch, Binding Together 200 Years of
Louisiana History.” Will be unveiled at the Louisiana State Archives
during a ceremony on April 26, 2012 from 5pm to 7pm. It is not too late to see the quilt. It is
still on display at the Louisiana State Archives, 3851 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge.
Earth Day Quilt
Exhibit
Jessie Comeaux will have a
quilt display at the BTR Earth Day Celebration on April 22, 2012 in downtown
BTR.
Hand Quilting at
the Rural Life Museum
The Rural Life Museum wants
folks to hand quilt at the museum on Mondays and Tuesdays. Renee has volunteered to help. The group meets for 2 hours on Monday and
Tuesday in an “old time” quilt bee fashion.

Quilt Guild Book
Sale
The
Sassi Strippers were given a collection of magazines/quilt books after the last
library quilt show in August 2011. An
additional donation of books/magazines was recently made to the guild. A total of $261.50 was presented to the
treasurer for deposit of proceeds from the sale. The remaining books that were not sold were
donated to the library. Ms. Yvonne who
is head of the Jones Creek library said that the books will be sent downtown to
be put into circulation or into the recycle book program. Any duplicates will be given away as door
prizes at future meetings. The magazines
will be used as door prizes as well.
Teddy Bear’s for
Kids
Merlene
Lewis presented this charity project before the guild last year (as noted in
August 2011 minutes and voted on in November 2011). Our Lady Of The
Lake Regional Medical Center Emergency Room called & notified Merlene that
they very much wanted the bears Sassi Strippers was offering to make for child
patients. The lady asked her how many were already made up & could she
deliver them right away. Merlene made
76, Karol Guidry made 15, and Betty Braud made 1 to fulfill the hospital’s
request. Merlene was scheduled to meet
with Katie Duhe of the Child Life Center at the hospital on April 20, 2012 to
drop off the first group of bears.
Karol Guidry sent an email to
the guild members on April 2, 2012 which included the instructions for the
bears.
Please feel free to make as
many as you would like to & bring them to next month's meeting. If you do not have the instructions, please
let us know and will can provide extra copies at the next meeting.
Merlene, Karol, and Betty
brought some to show guild members who haven't seen them.
They can be made of materials
you have in your stash, plaids, prints, solids or Flannel, what ever you want
to use. Please let us know if anyone
would like some of the guild’s donated fabric to make the bears. Let’s keep this project going for the
remainder of the year.
Charity Quilts
The guild will use its
donated fabric to construct charity quilts.
Jessie provided 6 different patterns and the guild voted on 2 choices
during last month’s meeting. Jessie presented
the winners Bento Box Block (#1) and Nine Patch Lattice (#2) during the March
meeting. Lap size quilts will be
made.
We will have a sew-in at the library and the date will be
announced in the future. Another option
would be to meet at River City’s 2nd Sat sew-in to work as a
group.
There will be no River City sew-in during May due to it
falling on Mother’s Day weekend, so this is not an option for this month. Please note that in your calendar - May 12th
is not a sew day for the charity quilts as was originally discussed.
Two charities were contacted for possible quilt donation
– Cancer Services on Lobdell, which will take any size quilts, and a veteran’s
home, which will take lap/twin quilts.
At this time all the fabric has been distributed to wash
and press. I thank you for your
help. The remaining donated fabric has
been organized into two bins to be cut and bagged to create kits at a future
sew day.
Block of the Month
- Becky
We are doing a block of the month project
for 2012. Becky Fincher is the guild
contact for this activity. Becky sent
out an email with the details as well as the blocks for January, February, and
March. Please note that each block will
be 12” finished. Several members brought
their blocks.

I don't know where the
last week went. I apologize for taking a week to get this out. I will have

quilt.

Valerie made a presentation to the group on making fabric
choices for using in your quilts.
Door Prize Drawing

Keith is the guild contact in charge of door prizes. These were items donated by other guild
members or members of the quilting community.
If there is something that you don’t use or have a duplicate of
something in your quilt room, please consider donating it to the group to use
as a door prize. Stay tuned for more
chances to win a door prize at a future quilt meeting. Winners during April were Elsie, Heidi, and
Pam.
Show and Tell
There were 12 folks in attendance at the meeting – 12
members.
Next month – Merlene
Lewis will make a presentation on making quilted jackets and will bring several
of the quilted jackets that she made for the Hoffman challenge… and JoAnn is
open so we will be creating guild membership cards so that you can get your
JoAnn discounts…
