  1. New business
a)  No new business at this time.
  1. Program Report – Betty B presented a program on Wool Applique/Embroidery:
a)    Betty loves handwork and finds wool applique very relaxing as wool does not need to have the edges turned under and 100% wood does not fray making it easy to work with.
b)    Betty described the various types of wool fabric used in applique:
                             i.         Wool felt – compressed wool fibers which may need some soft fuse applied to prevent edge fraying.  This is good for very small pieces of applique
ii.         Woven wool -100% wool that has been felted.  Yardage of this type is somewhat expensive.
iii.         You can felt your own woven wool  by taking 100% wool fabric, either purchased or from old clothing, which can be found in thrift stores.  Skirts and pants are the easiest to work with.  All seams, interfacing and hardware must be removed, and keep salvaged fabric pieces as large as possible.
iv.         To felt the wool, wash in very hot water along with towels or jeans with a little mild detergent, rinse in cold water.  Used a color catcher if bleeding might be problem.  Small pieces should be placed in a mesh bag..  Dry at the hottest setting available and check the lint filter frequently.  Repeat..
c)    Many patterns and books are available in stores or online.  Traditional applique patterns and shapes can be used in wool applique and seam allowances do not have to be added.
                             i.         Since wool yardage is expensive, Cotton, flannel or wool can be used for backgrounds.
ii.         Pattern pieces can be traced on freezer paper, pressed on the wool square, then cut out.
iii.         Pattern pieces can be layered, either stapled or glued, then blanket stitched together prior to adding to the background.
d)    Projects can be embellished with embroidery, beads, buttons, etc.
e)    Betty described the various threads to be used in wool applique.
f)     Betty also described how to make felted wool dryer balls which are a 100% replacement for dyer sheets or softeners.
                             i.       100% wool yarn (not superwash) in a neutral color is used.  Betty recommended Lion Brand Fisherman’s wool.  Approximately 4 balls can be made from one skein.
ii.       Wrap the yarn around itself until you have a ball the size of a baseball, then cut the yarn leaving a long tail.  Using a tapestry needle, weave the tail back and forth thru the ball several times.
iii.       Place the balls in the leg of old pantyhose and tie a know between each ball.  Knot the ends of the pantyhose as well..
iv.       Wash the yarn balls with a load of towels using very hot water, then place in dryer with the towels and dry on high heat.  Repeat wash and dry process to felt the balls.
                           v.       Remove the balls from the pantyhose and place in your dryer.  There is no need to use fabric softeners of any type when using yarn balls.
g)    For additional information of wook dryer balls go to this link:  http://www.petalstopicots.com/2014/02/how-to-make-felted-wool-dryer-balls/.

b)    Pam T. showed off a coloring book with pictures that could potentially be used for quilting patterns..

SSQG meeting - May 21, 2015

Hello my talented beauties,

I hope everyone has had time to listen to the hum of their sewing machines & enjoy the passion of quilting lately!  We have our Sassi Strippers meeting on Thursday, May 21, 2015 @ 6:30pm at the Jones Creek Library.  We have so much going on in our guild that I hope you are enjoying being a Sassi Stripper member!  When I accepted this position as President, my goal was very clear to me.  I wanted an atmosphere that would inspire creativity, passion & love for quilting.  To promote education & have a variety of arts because you never know what may create a spark for an idea.  The most important goal for me is fun, laughter & fellowship at every meeting!  As usual, we have another full night planned!  We will be making some more decisions.  Betty Braud will present a program on wool appliqué/embroidery. Please bring any tabs or inverted star blocks to be turned in.  Please bring any kind of project for show-n-tell that has appliqué or embroidery in it & any other type of project you would like to share.  So with that being said, come on down for another night of fun, creativity & fellowship!!!

Humbly yours,

Pam Tennyson
