Charity Bears: Merlene & Cheryl
Merlene & Cheryl delivered the following below:
OLOL received 26 quilts & 85 bears
Cancer Services received 26 quilts & 58 bears (some of those did not have the face drawn on (per their request)
Both charities were given 1 quilt & 3 bears at presentation of charities at demo day.  They were also emailed a picture of the representative receiving the quilt & bears.
From 2011 until this delivery, Sassi Strippers has donated 2,356 Bears!

Marilyn showed a cosmetic bag done by needlework, it was a kit.
Bonnie showed her Puff baby quilt & a quilt block.
Merlene shared that her "Road to Mandalay" Jacket is traveling with the Hoffman 2015 Challenge!  She showed the book with her picture of the jaceket.

SSQG Meeting - 6:30pm Thursday Sept 17, 2015

Hello my talented beauties,

    I hope everyone has been enjoying the cooler temperatures.  These are beautiful days to sit outside & do any type of handwork!  We have our Sassi Strippers meeting on Thursday, September 17, 2015 @ 6:30 pm at the Jones Creek Library.  I would like to thank Cherry Guidry, for the sharing her valuable time & knowledge with our guild.  She spent almost an 1 1/2 showing us her incredibly intricate, beautiful quilts , as well as her knowledge on preparing your quilts for longarm quilting!!!  She is one talented artist & I am so happy for her success!  Everyone enjoyed her with lots of chatter, questions & smiles!  Thursday we will be working on Bears, Bears, Bears!!!  This batch we are working on, we want to get to the body of the bear stage & they will not have a face drawn on them. We will be taking these bears to the "Senior Craft" night on October 12, 2015 @ the library, for the participants to stuff that evening with our volunteers from the guild.  Cancer Services has requested bears without a face drawn on them, so we will send these bears to them after completion.   Please bring what you would personally like to work on for the bears & the supplies to do so.  It is coming to that time of the year to appoint a committee to nominate  Officers for the 2016.  Please start thinking about who you would like to serve & if anyone is interested in any of the positions please let me know.  Congratulations again, to all our ladies that won ribbons for Viewer's Choice in the "Kaleidoscope of Quilts" for 2015 Quilt Show!!!

Quilt Show take down - 9am Sat Aug 29th

Hello my talented beauties,

   Calling all Quilt Angels!  We are confirmed to be at the Jones Creek Library to take down the Quilt Show at 9:00am.  Please make plans to come at that time to help. With everyone there working as a team,  we way can take down the quilts, quickly & efficiently.  Please make arrangements to take your quilts, garments, case items, etc home with you on Saturday. j)      Quilt Show (SSQG membership) –  The 2015 Kaleidoscope of Quilts show is a resounding success.  Participation day was held on August 15^th where visitors to the library helped stuff charity bears, took the children’s book quilt quiz, colored paper quilt blocks, had the opportunity to sew quilt squares and learn about appliqué and other various handcrafts.

                           i.       53 votes were received for the Viewer’s Choice competition.  There was a tie for 3^rd Place with two of Merlene L’s quilts, a 4-way tie for 2^nd place between Elsie H, Merlene L, Sharon H and Pam T, with 1^st place going to Becky Fr for her “Fractured Rainbows” entry.

                          ii.       Show takedown day is tentatively schedule for Saturday, August 29^th.

                         iii.       52 charity quilts were displayed along with the show entries.  Elsie H was presented with the Charity Quilt Queen ribbon for making a whopping 19 charity quilts.  Many thanks to all members who took the time to make and quilt the pieces.

k)     Charity Quilts/Projects (Merlene L. & Cheryl A.) –

                         i.         Merlene L. did not have a final count of completed bears, but does have a “bear room” set up in her home to hold them.  The Cancer Services representative asked that some of the bears not have faces drawn on as they would like to use the blank bears to help children through their treatments.

7. Program Report – Cherry Guidry presented a trunk show of her quilt patterns and fabric designs, and also a program on preparing a quilt for a longarmer.

a)    Cherry is a long time sewer and quilter, having begun a fascination with fabric and sewing as a child.  She started quilting in 2004 and since quilting is her favorite part of making a quilt, she became a longarmer, which morphed into fabric and quilt pattern design. Benatrex carries her fabric lines.  She also started blogging to share her knowledge.  A link to her online shop and blog can be found at http://cherryblossomsquilting.com/

b)    Cherry presented a trunk show of completed quilts that used her patterns and fabric lines.  These included quilts made from the same pattern but using different fabrics, batting, techniques, etc.  Many of her patterns are raw edge appliqué.

c)    Cherry discussed the various types of batting that she prefers to use in her quilts and the whys and wherefores of her choices

d)    Cherry held a discussion on various types of thread that can be used both for pieceing and quilting.

e)    Cherry went over the necessary steps for preparing a quilt for longarm quilting along with problems associated with inaccurate piecing, uneven borders, hanging threads, etc.  She also detailed why a longarm quilter needs backs and batting that are 6-8” longer and wider than the top, and why a neatly pressed quilt is essential to beautiful quilt designs.  She recommended a bedspread hanger wrapped in pool noodle as a good way to transport a quilt.

f)     Cherry passed around some handouts that expanded on her explanations.

9. Announcements –..

a)    Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 17^th.  The guild will be making bear shells. 

b)    Renee H is to be the GSQA President in 2017, and will fill the President Elect roles in 2016, and outgoing President in 2018.

SSQG Meeting - August 20, 2015

Hello my talented beauties,

   I hope everyone has enjoyed their Summer, also some time with family & friends.  We have our Sassi Strippers meeting on Thursday, August 20, 2015 @ 6:30pm at the Jones Creek Library.  I would like to thank Gayle Soileau for sharing her amazing work with us, everything was just beautiful.  She was such a delight & everyone enjoyed her so much!  I am so happy to announce that Cherry Guidry will be sharing her trunk show with us at the August meeting!  She will also be telling us how to prepare our quilts for quilting.  If any of you have done a quilt with her patterns, please bring it to share with Cherry & the guild.  I can't tell you how pleased I am with the success of Kaleidoscope of Quilts 2015, you guys rocked it!!!  This guild continues to amaze me with your talent & teamwork!  I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all that you do!!!  We have pictures to share & ribbons to give out for Viewer's Choice.  Guild members who won ribbons, please attend so we can honor you & your beautiful quilts.  We will be making a couple of decisions at the meeting, one being the take down date of the Quilt Show.  Please bring any tabs you have to turn into Betty.  If you have finished any UFO's, please bring them to share with the guild.  We love to see each others work, so bring your creations for Show-n-tell, if you have something.  Come enjoy another night of fun, creativity & fellowship!

Quilt Show Demo Day - 8/15/15

Hello my talented beauties,

 As you know, Saturday 15th is Demo Day at the Jones Creek Library for the Quilt Show.  Calling for all hands on deck, we will be there from 9:30am - 2:30pm.  The public will be attending from 10:00am - 2:00pm with the presentation of the charity quilts at 1:30pm. Please let me know if you are going to be able to attend or not.  Also, let me know what you would like to do that day, so I can finalize everything before Thursday.  I would like our Guild to have a variety of everything that we love & know how to do.  I thank all of you for your hard work throughout the year, you make such a difference in so many lives.  Your quilts are just beautiful, they have already made this a fabulous Quilt Show & a huge success!!! My hat is off to each & everyone of you!  It's time to play, let's share our craft!  Can't wait to spend time with all you, Sassi Strippers!😃

                           i.       .Personal quilt entries and completed charity quilts were turned in for review prior to the hanging date.

                          ii.       Hanging and show set up is scheduled for July 30^th & 31^st (9am - ?)

                         iii.       Demo Day is schedule for August 15^th (10am-2pm).  Volunteers to demonstrate craft skills are welcome.

                        iv.       Expenditures for demo day items/supplies were approved (lunch sandwich platter, paper and ink for signs, etc).

k)     Charity Quilts/Projects (Merlene L. & Cheryl A.) –

                         i.         Merlene L received a thank you card for the completed117 bears turned over to Our Lady of the Lake.  More bears are available to be stuffed at the Quilt Show in August.  Merlene L. asks the membership to continue to make more bears.

7. Program Report – Gayle Soileau presented a program on Rug Hooking:

a)    Gayle is a Rug Hooker Extraordinaire, who teaches, takes classes and travels to feed her love of rug hooking.  Gayle started hand quilting in the early 80s, moved on to machine piecing, then found the art of hooking rugs.  She is the proprietor of Red Stick Rug Hooker, her local business where others can learn how to hook their own rugs and also purchase fabric and supplies.

b)    Rug hooking was originally done by sailors who used bent nails, burlap and recycled fabric to make rugs.  More modern tools and supplies include specialty hooks, linen and rug warp, frames, cutting machines to make the wool strips, and wool fabric that is felted.  Rugs made by hooking are very durable and can last 100 years.  The binding wears out but can be replaced. Gayle will be taking a class on finishing rugs in a more advanced manner.

c)    Gayle recommended the Nimble Thimble, a quilt shope/rug hook shop) in Tyler TX as one of the best to purchase supplies.  Wool fat quarters (cut from 60”wide bolts), strips of wool and yardage are priced at $38-93 per yard.  The magazine, Celebrations, features the best 100 hooked rugs.

d)    Gayle outlined her class structure, which consists of a week long retreat.  Price of $325 includes the teacher and lunch, but not lodging.

e)    Along with may examples of her hooked rugs, Gayle also presented samples of Russian Needle Punch items, and items made from rug hooking such as handbags and footstools.

f)     Gayle outlined some of the costs of starting in rug hooking, such as cutting machines, frames, hooks, etc.

g)    Gayle completed her program by allowing SSQG members and guest to try rug hooking, from cutting of wool strips, to quickly hooking the strips onto some linen.
