April Meeting 4/21/16

Hello my talented beauties,

    I hope everyone is enjoying all of the quilting activities that are going on this year.  I can just hear the wheels of inspiration turning & the sewing machines humming!  Come, share your stories & experiences with each other!   We have our next meeting on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30 pm @ the Jones Creek Library.  I would like to thank Kathy Brown, for sharing her story with us that had everyone listening to every word.  She also shared her technique & quilts from her "Strip Smart with the Strip Smart Mini".  We love Kathy & are so happy for her continued success & blessings!!!  Looking forward to our April program, Debbi Kelly will be sharing her knowledge & techniques on "English Paper Piecing ".  Can't wait, it is going to be so much fun, she is such a sweetheart!  I need each member to bring 2 or 3 cotton squares, measuring 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" each.  The color doesn't matter, it is strictly to practice the techniques.  Also bring a needle (sharp or appliqué-it is just to baste the fabric), thread & scissor for you to use as well.  Big shout out to all the members for turning in their 2016 membership dues so quickly, well done ladies!  Remember to start thinking about what you would like to hang in the Quilt Show at the library.  Last year y'all did an amazing job & I am on pins & needles to see what the Sassi Strippers do this year!  Please continue to collect the tabs & bring them to turn into Betty & contributions as well to for the door prizes to Renee.  Please bring your completed UFO's to share & pull from "Kathy's Basket"!  Last but not least, everyone's favorite, please bring something for show-n-tell!  So come  join me for another night of fun, creativity & fellowship!

1. President/Call to order (Pam T) – 6:32pm
2. Sign In, Welcome to Members and Guests – 14 members attended along with 1 guest.
3. Reading of the minutes and motion to accept –

4. Reports of officers and committees
   1. Treasurer’s report (Elsie H) –
      1. Beginning Balance: $876.32
      2. Deposits: $192.00
      3. Expenditures: -0-

   2. President (Pam T) – Pam asked for all 2016 dues be turned in and handed out membership cards.
   3. VP/Programming (Sharon H) – Sharon introduced Kathy Brown who presented the program for March-Strip Smart with the Strip Smart Mini.

Also, Sharon requested that if you have any suggestions for future programs to let Sharon know by calling her at (225)953-0433 or texting.

4. Secretary (Linda B & Valerie K) – Linda B is Secretary & Valerie K is her back up, they were both thanked again for volunteering.
5. Blog (Marilyn H) (sassistrippersquiltguild.blogspot.com) - Marilyn H continues to update the blog and serve as Administrator. She was thanked again for volunteering.
6. Historian (Marilyn H) – Marilyn H will continue to add picture links and organize notebooks that include pictures, articles highlighting SSQG activities.
7. Unfinished Projects (UFOs – Kathy S) – Mynan G showed “ X marks the Dot” and she chose chocolate from the basket.

UFO’s are quilts started before December 31, 2015 & finished during the year of 2016.

1. Tabs (Betty B) – Tabs continue to be collected for the Ronald McDonald House.
2. Door Prizes (Renee H) –Winners of the door prizes were Valerie K (Neutrals), April R (Dr. Seus)
3. Just Do It (Pam T) – The group will plan a road trip to Mia’s Fabric Café’ and Dukes for lunch.
4. Quilt Show (SSQG membership) – The theme for 2016 is “Anything Goes”. Date to be announced soon for the quilt show and continue to work on the charity quilts as well as Storytime quilts.
5. Charity Quilts (Merlene L & Cheryl A) –
   1. Teddy Bear Sew Day – Pam will send out an email with date and time.
   2. Kathy S donated a bolt of flannel fabric for making bears.

   1. No unfinished business.
2. New Business – For the Quilt Show in Slidell, at the Harbor Center, the group will meet at the Target on Millerville Road and carpool to the show and go to eat lunch after the show. The group will also plan a road trip to Mia’s fabric café’ and Dukes in Watson for lunch at a future date

7. Program- Kathy Brown gave a history of her sewing and quilting background and how she started her career as a pattern designer after leaving her career at a plant. She is a designer for Red Rooster and her most recent line is called “Puddle Jumpers”. She shared her new pattern book “Strip-Smart Friends” and the Creative Grids Template that goes along with the book. She presented samples of her many quilts. Kathy is also participating in “The Splendid Sampler” this program is to promote and stretch your quilting skills. There will be 100 blocks and use 35 fat quarters with a 6” finished block and can be found on American Patchwork & Quilting Radio. Many thanks to Kathy Brown for sharing her time and talent.

8. Show and Tell – Pam T showed Fused Hibiscus wall hanging that she is in the process of making. Sharon H – Showed a nice Bicycle Quilt that she made for a friend. Merlene L - Showed storybook wall hangings for Pinkalicious, Pigdgen found a Hot Dog, Captain underpants, and a Garden Angels Appliqué quilt and a Baskets and Flowers Appliqué’ quilt. Mynan G - showed 6 totes that she made using soft and stable batting and a “Road to Balli” quilt.
9. Announcements –
   1. GSQA Quilt Show April 8 & 9, 2016 at Harbor Centre in Slidell. Will meet at Target parking lot off Millerville @ 8:30am to carpool to the GSQA quilt show and have lunch.
   2. SSQG next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 21^st, 2016 at 6:30 p.m.
   3. Debbie Kelly will present next program on “English Paper Piecing” in April.

1. President/Call to order (Pam T.) – 6:51pm
2. Sign In, Welcome to Members and Guests – 13 members (including welcoming back to the SSQG, Linda Baumann & Valerie Kazlauskas) attended along with 1 guest.

President (Pam T) – Pam T presented an interactive slide show of the 2015 Kaleidoscope Quilt Show & announced that there is a vacancy for the Secretary position due to Valerie V moving to Florida in the near future. Valerie V is available for any questions or assistance needed in reference to the Secretary duties.
   3. VP/Programming (Sharon H) – Mynan G presented the program for February on “Microwave Bowl Buddies”.
   4. Secretary (Linda B) – Linda B volunteered to take over as Secretary for the remainder of the year. Valerie K volunteered to be the backup. Linda B will resume the duties of taking the minutes at the meeting, forward them to Pam T to verify approve & email to all the members. Marilyn H will then post them to the blog.
   5. Blog (Marilyn H) (sassistrippersquiltguild.blogspot.com) - Marilyn H volunteered to resume the duties of the Blog Administrator.
   6. Historian (Marilyn H) – Marilyn H will continue to add picture links and organize notebooks that include pictures, articles highlighting SSQG activities.
   7. Unfinished Projects (UFOs – Kathy S) – 3 UFO’s were shown this month by Merlene L

Pam explained that UFO’s are quilts that are finished all the way to the binding. They are started before December 31, 2015 & finished during the year of 2016.

9. Door Prizes (Renee H) –Winners of the door prizes were Marilyn H, Valerie V, Cheryl A, Valerie K. Mynan also received one for presenting February’s program.
10. Just Do It (Pam T) - Valerie V showed a quilt that was done in the “Hack and Slash” fashion.
11. Quilt Show (SSQG membership) – Pam asked the members if they would like to not have a committee again this year where all members contribute to the Quilt Show like last year. The theme for 2016 is “Anything Goes”.
12. Charity Quilts/Projects (Merlene L & Cheryl A) –
    1. Pam T announced that she is so impressed & has been able to see firsthand what the cancer society does for someone battling cancer.
    2. Merlene read a thank you note from OLOL thanking us for the bears donated to the Children’s Hospital. Merlene gave a tally of bears that have been made since 2011 (2,907 bears). In 2015 (545) bears completed which surpassed Pam’s challenge of 500. The 2016 challenge is 550.

3. Linda B suggested that the McMains Center be considered as a charity in the future. It was

discussed and we will revisit and vote on charities in 2017.

1. Renee H motioned to keep charities as OLOL Children’s Hospital and Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge. Elsie H 2^nd the motion & the membership agreed.

a) Program Report – Mynan presented a demo on making “Microwave Bowl Buddies” & directions were given out to the membership.

7. Show and Tell – Renee H showed a very nice poster to fabric duplicate wall hanging she is working on. Elsie H presented a beautiful quilt that she used a saucer to draw curves and then quilted them herself on her machine.
8. Announcements –.
   1. Renee H – talked about the sew day for Quilts of Valor that there was a big turnout. Seventy people attended and helped to sew and assemble quilts. Also, quilts were presented to Veterans.
   2. Gaye Smith and Debbie Kelly started a group that meets once a month at the Fairwood Library on Old Hammond Hwy. The name of the group is “Montage” English paper piecing. The next meeting is scheduled for February 28^th from 2p.m.-5p.m.
   3. SSQG next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 18^th, 2016 at 6:30 p.m.

February mtg, 2/18/16

Hello my talented beauties,

    I am so glad that all of you stayed safe & sound last month.  It defiantly was the right call to make due to the bad weather BUT I missed seeing all of you!!!  So we are going to have a do-over of our January meeting's agenda at the February 18, 2016 meeting, 6:30 pm at the Jones Creek Library.  Please read last months post below for the details of our meeting's agenda & I can't wait to see all of your beautiful faces & fabulous personalities there.......

January 21 meeting CANCELLED.

Hello my talented beauties,

     Thank you so much for your quick response.  The decision has been made & I completely agree with it, I believe it is better to be safe than sorry. Due to the possibility of the bad weather, the majority would rather not have the meeting tonite.  There will be no meeting tonight for the Sassi Strippers Quilt Guild.  The meeting is cancelled for January, we will move all agendas to the February meeting & Mynan will also be teaching her program in February.  I will send out renewal forms as well as questionnaires to make up for the lost meeting to everyone individually.  I will be in touch, stay safe & dry, see you in February!  Please respond to this email so I know everyone knows that the meeting is cancelled, thank you.

*****Your safety is the most important thing to me.  There are reports of extremely bad weather coming tonight during our meeting time. There are also reports of the possibility of tornados & high winds.  They have let some schools out early.  Please respond to my email By 3:00pm & let me know if y'all would like to have the meeting tonight or reschedule it. Please be sure to check your email by 5:00pm to find out if the meeting is still on or if the guild chose to reschedule it.  I will go by the majority rules, thank you.

Hello my talented beauties,

    I hope everyone one had a fabulous & spectacular, fun filled holiday season!  We are kicking off the new year with the first meeting on January 21, 2016 @ 6:30pm at the Jones Creek Library.  We can look back on 2015 with so many memories, of new friendships, lots of laughs & accomplished goals that made such a difference in so many lives!!!  The members of Sassi Strippers Quilt Guild leave me speechless with your talents & generosity!  I am so proud of you, each one of you are so near & dear to my heart!  The year 2015 ended with a bang, our Christmas Party was so special & it was a huge success!  The food was so awesome,  you ladies really know how to put on a spread!   The highlight of the night was defiantly the company!  I want to thank each & everyone of you for all your kind words, texts, emails & calls telling me how much you enjoyed it.  It was my pleasure to spoil you for all that you have done all year long for your community.  I can't thank you enough for your generosity!  You guys are the BEST!!!  Our very own, the talented, Mynan Guidry is kind enough to share with us how to make "Microwave Bowl Buddies".  Looking forward to learning this & plan on making some for our home!  I am humbled & it is my honor to serve you again for the year of 2016.   I can't thank my board enough, as well as my crew that went above & beyond the call of duty in 2015!  That would be Sharon, Elsie, Valerie, Merlene, Cheryl, Marilyn, Renee, Betty & Kathy!  Y'all are the bomb, thank you for contributing to making the guild everything it is today!!!   Last of all to the members, you are the most important element of the guild.  I can't say it enough, thank you so much for making this guild so much fun, let's keep it going!!!  Please bring your ideas, suggestions & input for the direction of the guild this year.  Please be ready to fill out your membership forms & pay your dues of $12.  I will issue "Sassi Stripper Quilt Guild Member Cards" to each of you after this step is completed & turned in to Elsie. Please bring any tabs you have to turn in & any contributions to the door prizes.  Please bring your UFO'S & anything you would like to share for show-n-tell.  So let's get the party started for 2016 & join me for another night of fun, creativity & fellowship!
