November Show and Tell

November Meeting -- November 21, 2019

Hi,

This Thursday will be a busy day for our guild with quilt delivery and our meeting.

We will be delivering quilts to the Veterans Home in Jackson, LA. We will leave at 10 am from the O'Neil Hobby Lobby. There are currently 7 of us going, and Betty and Lou will meet us up there. It is not too late to join us if you'd like, just let me know. As usual, we will stop somewhere on the way home for lunch, so be thinking of your favorite places. 

We will have our monthly guild meeting at 6:30 at Broadmoor United Methodist located at 10230 Mollylea Dr in Baton Rouge.  Fran will be showing us how she does her quilts using the Scenic View pattern.

7. Program – Betty gave a demonstration and instructions for an easy-to-make burp cloth. Pam gave instructions for making port pillows for cancer patients. Many were completed at the meeting and will be delivered with quilts to Cancer Services

October Meeting -- October 17, 2019

Hi,

Our October meeting will be this Thursday, October 17 at 6:30 at Broadmoor United Methodist Church in the Adult Learning Building. 

We will be making port pillows and Betty will show us how to make the burp cloths using the pattern she has. 

Bring your sewing machine, scissors, and extension cords. We will be sewing through velcro so if you want, bring something to remove the sticky from your needle. If you don't want to bring your machine, there will be other jobs to help complete these port pillows, such as stuffing. 6. New business – Christmas Party: Cheryl will try to book the big room at City Cafe for Thursday, December 12 (or Wednesday, December 11).
7. Program – Merlene, Karen and Monette told about their adventure to the Fall Paducah Quilt Show. They showed the treasures they bought. And, they modeled the jackets they made using Merlene’s pressed flowers technique. Pam demonstrated how to make Port Pillows and played a video with an alternate method.

September Red, White and Blue Quilts

September Meeting -- September 19, 2019

Hi All,

We will be meeting this Thursday, Sept 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Broadmoor United Methodist Church.

From Florida Blvd, turn onto Sharp Rd

Immediately AFTER Mollylea, turn into the driveway on right and continue to the left behind the Children's Building to the Adult Education Bldg. There is a giant lit parking lot back there. I will have a sign on the door. We will be in Room B105 of the Adult Education Bldg.

Remember to bring your $25.00 to reserve your space in the New York Beauty II class Nov. 2nd with Judy Holley. Class supply list is attached if you didn't see it before. 

Pam and Karol will be showing how to make port pillows for seatbelts for patients with a port. 

We will also be hearing about the recent trip that Merlene, Monnett, and Karen took to Paducah, KY, and see what all they brought back!

NEW YORK BEAUTY II

CLASS DESCRIPTION: Explore the possibilities by making a variety of New York Beauty blocks with various sized points and arcs. Mix and match the 8-inch blocks or choose a favorite and work with it. All points are paper pieced and all curves are sewn, no appliqué.

SUPPLY LIST:

• Sewing machine, all feet & extension cord
• Basic sewing supplies
• Rotary cutter, ruler & matt
• Paper scissors & fabric scissors
• Freezer paper & pen
• Small bag for trash
• Small 6” sq. ruler, opt.
• Iron & pressing surface (2 people to an iron if possible)

FABRIC: To make scrappy blocks bring a collection of a dozen or more fabrics you like in at least fat quarter sizes. Bring various sizes and scales of prints: florals, plaids, checks, etc. Include lights, mediums and darks, the usual scrappy mix. For the points to show up you will fabrics with high contrast between the fabrics in the points and the point backgrounds. The points will be clear and distinct if these fabrics read as solids. Save the busy, interesting prints for the larger sections of the block.

All day class. 9-3. Bring lunch.

6. New business – Kathy visited with a Volunteer Coordinator at Woman’s Hospital to ask about possible charity items for the guild to make and donate. Suggestions included knitted/crocheted hats and port pockets for adult cancer patients; and, small quilts or burp cloths or bibs for babies graduating from the NICU. SSQG will plan a Sew Day. Members should bring any patterns they might find for these items.
7. Program – Valerie presented an overview of Judy Holley’s Pet Portraits Class that she and Cheryl attended. Both showed samples.
